Where to pick Foxflowers in Highmountain

Last time, I recommended starting your herbalist in the Highmountain zone of World of Warcraft Legion because of the value of Foxflower. Well, I have to say I may have been a bit premature with that statement! It still holds good unless you are an alchemist as well, in which case, you will find that your opening Alchemy quests all take you to Azsuna.

One addon I would really recommend you installing is the Gathermate2 addon - I used to use Gatherer but as of this week, it still hasn't been updated for Legion herbs. I was slow to install this addon so although I picked Foxflowers all the way through Highmountain, I don't have a record of where they all are! I fixed that for Val'sharah and Azsuna though!

One other thing to note is that if you do start with Highmountain to take advantage of the high Auction House prices of Foxflower, it is worth keeping 60 back for your Alchemist. This is another thing I messed up on so I had to go all the way back to Highmountain to pick them for my Alchemy quest! Without the Gathermate2 information, it took a while to find a good spot but I eventually found this little area in the north to be the best for picking Foxflowers.

There are lots of murlocs around here and a bunch of crab type NPC's that wander in groups so you will have to fight your way through. On the far eastern edge of the range are neutral murlocs so if you don't feel like fighting and have time, you may find enough Foxflowers in the safe area to keep you supplied.

One of the biggest changes to herbalism in Legion is the fact that each herb now has a rank attached to it so when you pick your first Foxflower, you get a simple quest to pick more Foxflowers but the quest will take some additional quest items each time you pick, then asks you to return to the Herbalism trainer in Dalaran. Once you do that, you learn rank 1 Foxflower which increases the number of herbs for each pick and the trainer gives you another quest to learn rank 2 and later rank 3.

I was also slow to do the herbing quests so I had almost finished Highmountain before I gained the rank 3 skill. But I realized halfway through Val'sharah what was happening and jumped on the herbing quests as soon as I got them! It definitely improved the number of herbs I received each time I picked too.

Next time, I'll tell you about all the fun I'm having leveling my alchemy profession!

What's Been Selling This Week? 23rd Sept Edition

Well it felt like it was a good week on the Auction House but I have been a bit distracted by Hearthstone & a few other projects too. It was only yesterday evening when I went to take a screenshot of the My Sales summary that I realised that after the mini-patch last maintenance day, I hadn't enabled out of date addons & none of my sales for the week have been recorded! I feel like I've been asleep most of the week or at least zoned out so I doubt my figures would have been that good anyway!

However, I can say that I haven't sold as many gems as the previous week or any of the new glyphs as I didn't craft any new ones & I've even let my daily Cooldowns slip a bit too. I have been selling some of the new Crafted PvP pieces though - not for the 1000g they were in the first week after patch but I have kept the price up to around 700g. That sounds great but actually, that's what I was selling the previous PvP gear for soit's not really that good as material costs are much greater this time.

Having said that, Exotic Leather is super cheap now - I'm so glad I didn't raise my buy price before the patch - I was a little worried that I wouldn't have enough Leather but not having played the PTR, I hadn't picked up on the Skinners Paradise that is the Timeless Isle! I even managed to grab a few stacks of Exotic leather at 10-15g per stack!

Mysterious Fortune Cards are still selling well - my super cheap competitor must be busy over on the Isle or raiding or something because I've had almost no competition again this week. I'm not complaining - I still have over 1000 in stock so I'll be selling these until the next expansion I reckon!

As for the Isle? Well, I took my Paladin over first and got a whole load of 496 purples - sent some to my DK & then took her over too. Wow! What a difference between the two - my Pally can barely manage to stay alive, even though she has a much higher item level. My DK is blood spec though so although she stays alive pretty well, she takes forever to kill anything!

My paladin is my skinner too so I keep kept getting distracted by all that lovely leather just laying around! I'm not sure which alt I'll take over there next or quite what to do once I'm there to be honest. I quickly got bored of chest hunting & rare chasing isn't really much fun when you die in the first 30 seconds or so! lol

I made sure to turn my add-ons back on so hopefully normal reporting will resume next week. I did find this cool graph bit in TSM but I haven't got my head around the Accounting reporting function yet. You can clearly see when the Patch 5.4 activity started though & you can also see the flatline near the top where I didn't even log in for a day or two! Oops!

20 Days of Gold Making - Day 18 Advice for New Gold Makers

Today's 20 Days of Gold Making question isn't just a trip down Memory Lane as some of the early questions have been. Nope, today is Day 18 and the question is "What is the most important bit of advice you could give to a new gold maker? (not a game newbie though, just a newbie gold maker)".

This is actually quite a tough question to answer as so much depends on the current situation of the new gold maker. What level are their alts, which professions do they have and at what skill levels, and also how much gold do they have already. But as I was trying to think which piece of advice to give, I realised that actually there is a fairly straightforward single answer that would cover most new gold makers - at least to start with!

Research! 

Yup, read gold blogs (yay! you're here, it's working! lol), read forums, read Reddit, watch some Youtube or Twitch TV guys, listen to gold making podcasts - the list is almost endless & growing week by week. Don't forget to ask questions too - most public gold makers have Twitter or you could send them an email or ask on their livestream. A great place to start is my blog roll over on the right hand side of this page - I try to update it fairly regularly & as I find new gold blogs, I add them once they have a few posts published. It's sorted by most recent post too so if you don't have huge amounts of time to do your reading, the top few will always be the most current content.

Addons

The second most important piece of advice I would give is to get some Auction House addons - Auctionator is my favorite but Auctioneer is great too. Having said that, the great beast of the Auction House world is Trade Skill Master (TSM) and I use it all the time. It does many different things though so I think it would be intimidating to a total novice but there are loads of guides out there to help you learn it. I'm pretty sure I still don't use it to its full potential but I have calmed down on the gold making front for now so I guess it will be a while yet before I really get to grips with it!

Patience

The third important piece of advice I'd say is Patience! There are very few gold capped players who made their gold super-quickly. Most of us have been making gold for months if not years. The main exception would be those few players who saw the potential of the transmog market early on & dived in deep. By getting in so early and being prepared for it too, they had all the advantages of the huge buzz that surrounded the introduction of this new market & yes, some of them made a huge killing! That is the exception though, for us mere mortals who missed that boat, it takes time to build up your knowledge of markets, of hot selling items, of markets to avoid & which profession crafted items to produce.

Prudence

Lastly, I'd say prudence is vital too. Don't keep spending on stuff you don't really need, watch where your gold goes during normal playtime - do you reforge, re-gem & re-enchant too much? Can you resist that 'cheap' purple item on the Auction House or that lovely rare mount on the Black Market Auction House? If you can control your daily spending, spend wisely on raw materials for crafting, don't take huge risks when investing in items to flip (at least until you are really sure of your market) then you should see your gold balance creeping up nicely as you pull your gold from the mailbox.

There are loads of bits of advice I could give - that's partly why I started gold blogging! Each and every gold maker out there has their own way of doing things & every server is different too. By reading around, doing some research into markets yourself & trying things out, you will develop your own way. A little bit of Nev here, a bit of Cold there, throw in some Elvine or Power Word Gold & a bit of Eviscerated Gaming Podcast to top it all off & you'll have your own personal blend of goldmaking skills. The most important thing though - have fun!

20 Days of Gold Making - Day 11 Addons

Addons - get it? lol

I do love my addons so when I wrote the questions for my 20 Days of Gold Making, I just had to ask about them! The Question for today is "Most of us use TSM, Auctionator and/or Auctioneer in combo with Postal - are there any other lesser known gold making addons you use?".

I used to use Auctioneer but it was broken by one of the patches last year and didn't get updated for a while so I switched to Auctionator. I also use Trade Skill Master (TSM) but not to its' full potential, I'm sure!

Other addons I use related to gold making are MySales & Auditor as well as RecipeProfit for Gathermate (although not so much these days).

MySales gives me a quick overview of what's sold in the last time period - you can set it for 7 days, 1 month or alltime & you can also set it per character or per server/faction. You can see a list of individual sales via your mailbox or you can go to the Items tab & it shows sales by item which you can sort in a couple of ways. There are only 2 commands to remember too /ms window opens the view below & /ms config opens the configuration/settings window - nice and easy to remember for my ageing brain cells!

MySales addon Items window

Auditor is just a little addon that lets me see a summary of in & out gold flow across various characters. I like it for seeing how much I've spent on repairs, materials etc & as a quick glance at my overall gold total for the server. It just adds a button to the edge of your minimap so it's unobtrusive & you don't need to remember any commands to open it!

Above, you can see an example of the top half of the Auditor window. I used it to keep track of my Paladin's earning whilst she leveled from 85 - 90, without any Auction House activity. The time frame can be changed between various time frames, including 'this session', 'today' & 'month' so sometimes if I'm on a farming run, I'll change it to 'session' - just to see how much that farming spree earned me.

The bottom half of the window isn't shown but it has a list of all your other characters on the same faction & server so you can check their balances/earnings without having to log them. I don't use that bit very much to be honest but it's there if you want it.

RecipeProfit for Gathermate is very useful when you are out & about in Azeroth. It adds vendor sold recipes/plans details etc to your minimap so you can easily find the vendor. With so much to do in Mists of Pandaria, it will be a while before I'm doing much lowbie stuff but when I do, I often stop by the vendors to grab a few of these recipes. An Outland recipe run in particular used to be very profitable although I haven't tried it in a long while now.

So those are my 3 extra gold making addons. I don't think any of them are totally necessary & TSM covers much of this data too. I just like the very simple, 'quick glance to get info' usefulness of them. I use the TSM Accounting module when I want to look at specific items sales/profits or drill down for much more detailed analysis or to see when I've messed up my sales price & made a loss on something! I've been lucky there though!

Set Up A Shopping List in Auctionator

Auctionator Shopping Lists

One or two comments I've received lately made me wonder whether people are using Auctionator easily so I thought I'd put together a basic guide to setting up a shopping list, just in case anyone needs it. I'm using Cooking Materials for this example so it links nicely with my earlier Ironpaw Tokens & Cooking Materials Shuffling post. If you'd like help with any other Auction House addons, just let me know & I'll see if I can help.

OK, so you've installed Auctionator from Curse.com & opened your Auction House window for the first time - what do you see? You should see just 3 extra tabs at the bottom of your window - ignore the beancounter & TSM tabs in my screenshots - I really should get around to removing Beancounter as TSM-Accounting now has all the data I used to use in there. I only really use the Buy & Sell tabs - to be honest, I'm not sure I could even tell you what's in the More tab off the top of my head!

A basic search is easy - just type your item into the search box & hit enter (red dot at top in screenshot). Your most recent searches will then be stored in the window on the left - as you can see in the image. You can also search a range of items by clicking the + button (red circle in image).

You can search for a named item within a category or you can search for a subset of a category. In this second screenshot, you can see I've chosen Trade Goods from the drop down category list & then I'm about to choose Cooking in the sub category. If I was searching for level 77-80 green armor for example, I'd also add 77 & 80 in the level range boxes. If you do want to search armor - I like to pick the armor type too (in the sub category section) so I only get a small range of items to glimpse through. It just makes it easier to look through 20 Cloth pieces then say 25 Mail pieces rather than trying to look through every green 77-80 piece in one long list! 

For Cooking Materials however, we are only really interested in the Mists of Pandaria items at the moment but this list includes every cooking material in the Auction House. When the search results first pop up, they are automatically sorted by highest price first so naturally in this third screenshot, you can only see Pandaren cooking materials, however when I scrolled down, some of the cheapest Pandaren items were mixed in with earlier, lower level materials.

You can easily re-sort the search results list by just clicking on 'Lowest Price' marked with a red cross in the screenshot. This is a little misleading at first - it's not sorted by Lowest Price, it's showing the Lowest Price for that item. You have to click the individual item to get the details of available auctions but it's quick & easy & there's a Back button to get you back to this main list.

This is a great way to look for cheap herbs too - once it's sorted by lowest price first, if you see a herb like Goldthorn on the first page of results, you should probably snatch it up quickly! Currently the Cataclysm herbs are showing up on my first page which is great because I'm still making Mysterious Fortune Cards.

So to exclude materials I am not interested in, I created a shopping list specifically for Pandaren cooking materials. To create a new shopping list, click the New Shopping List button at the bottom left - it will ask you to give your new list a name so pick something easy like 'Cooking Mats' and start entering the items you want to add. I don't know if there's a quick way of doing this but I just type the item name in the Search box then click the Add Item button!

Now I have an easy way to look at individual cooking materials or I can use the 'Search for all items' button (bottom left, red button) to get an overview of the category. I use this list to get the prices for my spreadsheet so I can easily see which items are the best for IronPaw Token shuffling.

I also have shopping lists for hard to find items that I want to pick up cheaply whenever I can, lists for level 77-80 armor, lists for MoP green armour, list for each profession (not all mats, just the ones I use most often) & generally a list for everything I find I look for regularly!

So there you go - a quick & easy way to make Auction House searching so much easier - be careful though - making lists can be addictive! I have to periodically go through & check my list of lists & delete any that are no longer used but then I have been using Auctionator for a long while now. I hope this reads as clearly as I wanted it to - if there are any points you think need further explanation or if you've found an even easier way then please, do let me know in the comments.

Getting Started - Profession Addons

Getting started with professions can leave you going round in circles. Some professions (especially Engineering) have numerous crafted components that you need to make before you can craft the final item you wanted in the first place! The standard craft UI (User Interface) is very simple to use but it doesn't have a crafting queue or any way of making life easier.

That's where the following two addons come in handy. The first one I use on all my alts for every craft is Advanced Trade Skill Window, ATSW for short(screenie below). I've purposely picked my Engineering alt to show you this nifty addon & how it simplifies things for multi component items. Below, you can see I've decided to make 5 Mechanical Squirrel Boxes which needs 4 components - 2 of which are also crafted by engineers. ATSW has automatically added the basic crafted components to the craft queue so I don't have to manually work out how many copper bars I need to make the copper modulator, the handful of copper bolts & the mechanical squirrel box.

 
My next move would be to close this window down, go to my bank & use this addon to get all the basic materials out of the bank for me (this setting is in the Options tab, top right of the window). No more hunting various bags for all the bits, just 1 or 2 clicks & it gets them for you. Next move to the anvil & start crafting. How easy is that?

You can sort the various items by categories (default), by name (very handy when you know the name but not the category) or by difficulty level (more on that in a minute). There's a manual search bar & a drop down menu for the various categories which I use mostly on my enchanter when looking for, say glove enchants.

The second addon I want to tell you about today is Lil' Sparkeys Workshop. This addon works with ATSW & basically uses your Auctioneer scans (you have been doing them regularly, haven't you?) to calculate costs & profits for each craftable item. You can see an extra column of figures in the screenshot below - that's the Lil Sparkey's results and if you hover over one of the results figures, you get the little pop out window shown at the bottom right, which gives you the breakdowns.

You can also see that I have sorted the craftables by difficulty for this screen shot. When I first started playing, I took skinning & leatherworking & levelled both gradually as I was questing & levelling my character. I wish I had known about these 2 addons then! I would have made the most profitable items that could give skill ups rather than the item which used the least mats.

These days when I level a profession, I use the Lil Sparkeys profit figures as a guide to which of the skill up recipes to make. In the above screenie, you can see there is a huge profit to be made on the Gnomish Net-O-Matic Projector but if you look at the item details, Auctioneer has only seen 2 of them & this item is only useable by Engineers so I wouldn't be counting my chickens on this one. (screen shot of Item data given by Auctioneer, not for the Net-O-Matic but you get the idea!)

Whilst the Unstable Trigger is only showing as 4g 81s profit & it's a green skill up (less chance of a skill point), if my aim is to maximise profits whilst levelling then that is the obvious choice. Sometimes it's lots of little profits to get to the same place in the end. Don't be blinded by those big numbers, engage your brain & think about what your addons are showing you.

Another addon I will talk about at a later date is Trade Skill Master (TSM) - it is a much more complicated addon to set up but it is worth its' weight in gold & has revolutionised the way I play my glyph & gem markets. I don't think it's really a starter addon though which is why I've left it out of todays post.

A Profitable 'Oopsie!'

I'm still trying to max my Leatherworking but having skinning on a priest is possibly the slowest form of farming torture! I've been contemplating dropping mining on my paladin & re-instating skinning but yesterday afternoon I had a total brainfart & clicked the wrong button before actually making my decision. Bye bye max mining :(

Oh shoot! now what? Well, I decided I may as well go ahead & level my skinning back up so I decided to turn it into  one of my 'experiments'! I balanced my pally out to 3k gold & a spare alt to 1000g to act as a banker for the duration of this little experiment. I have sent absolutely everything except vendor trash to the bank alt & she's been listing it. But my pally also has Archaeology so where the skinning sites have coincided, I've also managed to put a few skill points on my archaeology. I've also done some sidetrips to find Elders as it's the Lunar Festival & I was going to be flying around anyway!

So what has this to do with making gold & profits? A few days ago, Zoxy posted his JMTC carnival blog post and if you look in the comments, you will see I was very happy because he mentioned the RecipeProfit addon. This is an excellent replacement for one of my old favourites, RecipeRadar which is broken & no longer supported. So after unlearning mining, & relearning skinning, I logged out to get some addons sorted.

RecipeProfit adds icons to your minimap to show you where vendor recipes are - it works like the gatherer/gathermate nodes & you can switch it on/off quite easily. As I've been running around skinning, I've also had to empty my bags etc so I've spent a few minutes here & there, visiting vendors & buying recipes (by recipes I mean plans/schematics/design/patterns etc).

You can see from the mysales image & the AH image - things are selling fairly well! I still have loads of stuff listed & I haven't quite finished levelling skinning yet so more yet to come & this is just the first 24 hours.

I also got very lucky & picked up a Dark Whelpling :) Auctioneer price says average of about 1900g but it's on AH at 750g at the moment. I'm torn because my pally is my pet & mount collector but I also want the gold! arrrggghhh, decisions, decisions!

So I guess what I'm saying is, don't forget vendor recipes while you're out & about  - RecipeProfit is great & if you're currently doing the Elders runaround, why not pick up a few vendor bits while you're at it? It could be worth your while & if you're short of time to make gold, this is a great way to combine questing & shopping!
